The paper provides a methodology for the guided drafting of administrative documents that meet criteria of clarity and simplicity in both content and language. The methodology is divided into three phases. The first consists of a quantitative analysis focused on the linguistic complexity of the texts and was carried out using an automatic readability assessment approach based on natural language processing tools. A qualitative analysis was conducted in parallel to identify typical elements of administrative vocabulary that may hinder the understanding of communications addressed to citizens. Once the critical aspects had been identified, one of the texts analyzed was rewritten, seeking not only to modernize the language but also to produce a more readable document in terms of syntactic, textual, and paratextual characteristics. Finally, the rewriting process and subsequent quantitative assessment of readability are discussed, which has been re-checked using automatic readability assessment tools.
